Adam Masse’s meteoric rise in the world of competitive weightlifting continues.
The 24-year-old Langley lifter collected a bronze medal in the 77 kg division at the recently held 2016 Canadian Senior Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval, with a total of 287 kilograms (130 kg snatch and 157 kg clean and jerk) out of 23 lifters.
All three are new marks for his B.C. records, as well as personal bests.
Francis Luna-Grenier from Quebec took the gold with a total of 294 kg while the silver medal went to Jerome Boisclair also from Quebec, also at 294 total kg.
Luna-Grenier took the title by virtue of lesser body weight.
Both Luna-Grenier and Boisclair competed for Canada at the Pan Am Games last summer, and Luna-Grenier has also competed at the Commonwealth Games, where he collected international medals.
The three 77 kg medallists were also the overall top-ranked senior males out of 104 lifters under the Sinclair Rating, finishing in the same order as their 77 kg division, with Masse in third, scoring 366.
Masse has progressed quickly since his first competition in June 2014 and roughly four years of training.
His accomplishments include one gold medal in the 77 kg Open and one silver in the 85 kg Open. He is also a two-time 77 kg provincial titleholder and overall senior male.
Now, he has two bronze medals in his first two appearances at the Canadian championships.
The rest of the year should see Masse compete at the Ogopogo Open in August before returning to the B.C. provincials for a shot at a three-peat.
Tyler McLennan, another Langley native and Masse’s training partner out of Campus Crossfit, finished seventh in the 85 kg division at the senior nationals, also out 23 lifters.
This was McLennan’s first Canadian championships meet, in his first year of competitive lifting.
