Langley wins Clark Memorial Tourney

The Langley Ones skated away with first place at the Ryan Clark Memorial Tournament.

The team beat Surrey 6-4 at the last game of the four-day event.

“It went very well,” Kathy Irving, the Fuller Lake Arena Liaison, said.

“I can’t stress enough how much the team embodied the whole tournament.”

The tournament is in memory of Ryan Clark, a goalie killed in a car accident two years ago.

The tournament has zero tolerance for fighting and was run by volunteers.

“Ryan’s graduating class did score keeping and made the tournament so much fun,” Irving said about the volunteers.

Irving said there was tons of support from the surrounding community.

“The Clarks were so touched.”

All profits go towards the registration costs for players who cannot afford to play hockey.

Last year, 14 kids gained from the profits.

Along with special awards given out, each player was given a bomber hat — Ryan’s favourite style.

Langley wore their hats from the start, Irving said.

“They wore the hats on the bench during the first game,” she said.

“They embodied the spirit.”

Games were played at Fuller Lake Arena in Chemainus and the Island Savings Centre in Duncan.

The tournament was Friday, March 19 to Monday, March 21.
