Lantzville teen sets race-walking record at high school provincials

Olivia Lundman of Dover Bay wins junior girls' 1,500-metre race walk

A Nanaimo teen became provincial champion in race walking with a record-setting time.

Olivia Lundman of Dover Bay Secondary School won the junior girls’ 1,500-metre race walk at B.C. High School Track and Field Championships May 30-June 1 in Kelowna.

Lundman’s time of seven minutes, 5.63 seconds was more than a minute faster than the second-place finisher in the event. It was also a new record, bettering a 2015 time by more than six seconds.

Lundman was one of two locals to win high school track and field championships; the other was Ethan Katzberg of John Barsby Secondary School who won the senior boys’ hammer throw with a 60.83-metre toss.

Another highlight from provincials came in the junior boys’ 1,500-metre race, in which Barsby’s Gage Zanette finished in 3:57.38, just seven 100ths of a second away from first place.

Also of note but not listed in the results below; Keaton Heisterman, who is a member of the Nanaimo Track and Field Club but does not attend high school locally, finished second in both the senior boys’ 800m and 1,500m races.
