Under sunny skies in Colwood, the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club attracted a record turnout for its opening day on April 30 at West Shore Parks and Recreation.
With 84 bowlers out to celebrate the start of a new season, the club’s official opening was dedicated to the three eldest bowlers in the club, each of whom is still going strong at the age of 90.
The jack was delivered by Joe Busby, with the official first bowl delivered by Betty Walshaw. Taking care of them was skip for the moment, Stan Hopkins.
After the bowling was done for the day, members got down to the business of the club’s semi-annual general meeting which was followed by Pizza and cake.
Those in attendance heard the club is up to 110 members, with 10 or so individuals going through lessons. With some members still out of town, club officials expect the registration to hit 125.
The club encourages anyone who would like to come down and try lawn bowling to contact Ann Mathie at 250-478-7447.
