A reminder the seventh annual Sea Soil Classic takes root at the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club this weekend.
One of the premier Men’s Triples events in the province, the Classic draws top calibre bowlers from throughout B.C.
According to PLBC’s Carol Bucyk, the club will once again be fundraising during the event for the benefit of the Oceanside Hospice Society.
This year’s three-day tournament she says has attracted 10 strong teams in the Men’s Triples A event and eight teams in the B event.
The A event includes five past Canadian champions: Steve Santana (Vancouver); Hirendra Bhartu (Nanaimo); Vern Greenhill (Courtenay); Steve Forrest (Port Alberni), and Gary Robinson (Parksville).
Robinson is the defending champion of the event, having won it twice in the past three years.
Challenging the A players said Bucyk will be strong contending teams skipped by Rick Quibell, Vern Hagstrom and Tom Renton (Nanaimo), German Santana and James McGowan (Vancouver) and Stu MacNaughton (Parksville).
On the B side, Pat Kelly, PLBC President will lead his team agains the teams of skips Mick Banks, Brian Michell and Bill Mills from Parksville.
Qualicum has three teams in the mix headed by skips John Wilson, David Childs and Mike Ward. Jimmy Muller, skip from Nanaimo, rounds out the pack.
The competition gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday, with two rounds of play and continues with another three rounds of matches on Saturday. The top teams advance to playoffs on Sunday.
