Following last week’s double overtime loss, the Nelson Junior Leafs seek to redeem themselves this weekend with two wins.
“It’s our last major road trip of the year… we played well against Fernie for the most part, with a few lapses that cost us, but we’ve been working hard this week and I think we’re looking forward to the remainder of the season,” said Frank Maida, Leafs head coach.
The Leafs meet the Golden Rockets tonight and the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday, and Maida said they’re looking to gain four points.
This weekend will be the Leafs’ second week of play with returning goal scorer, Patrick Martens.
After a brief stint in the British Columbia Hockey League playing for Langley, Martens returned last week to finish off the season in Nelson.
“When you get your best player — at the time he left — back, it excites the team and it sends positive energy through the room. He’s a great addition to have back,” said Maida.
“Patrick was a leader when he was here, he’s a hard worker in practice, works hard in games and he’ll bring back some things that he learned from up there and pass it on to our players.”
Maida said the key to success this weekend will be to “concentrate on playing our game.”
“[We’ll] just play a full 60 minutes of our game, come out with a good warm up and continue on to a solid 60-minute game.”
