The Nelson Leafs are on a five-game winning streak that has turned the team’s early season around.
Nelson routed the Grand Forks Border Bruins 7-3 on Saturday before shutting out the Spokane Braves 4-0 on Sunday.
The Leafs (5-3-3) started the season with a six-game losing skid, but the wins have catapulted the team into a tie for second in the Neil Murdoch Division.
In Grand Forks, the Leafs used a four-goal second period to overwhelm the Border Bruins.
Joe Davidson and Bryden Pow each scored twice, while Kaleb Comishin, Shawn Campbell and Brady Miller added singles. Anderson Violette meanwhile stopped 28 shots.
Nathan Cohen-Wallis had two goals and Jake Huculak also scored for the Border Bruins (3-6-1). Shane Zilka allowed five goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Dillon Beebe, who gave up two more goals on 21 shots.
The next day in Nelson, Violette earned the shutout with a 24-save performance.
Reid Wilson, Tyler Badger, Alek Erichuk and Miller each scored on Marcello De Antunano, who finished with 20 saves for the Braves (6-6-1).
Nelson’s winning streak has relied on two wins apiece against division rivals Spokane and Grand Forks. The Leafs are now home for two weekend games against the Castlegar Rebels on Friday and the Golden Rockets on Saturday.
