Clinic prepares runners for annual Mother's Day Run

The Oceanside Running Club Association is holding its annual Learn to Run Clinic in preparation for the Mothers Day 10k and 5 k walk/run in May.

This year’s clinic starts on Wednesday, Feb 6 and will continue weekly every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

The sessions build over the weeks to the final clinic on May 8—the Wednesday before the Oceanside Mother’s Day run on Sunday, May 12.

“This (clinic) is designed for adults who want to learn healthy running skills in a safe and supportive environment,” said organizer Doug Brown. “You may have been a runner once and want to run again. You may be recovering from injury and want to regain your fitness, however you don’t have to be a runner or have previous running experience to take part.”

Brown said participants do need to be able to walk comfortably at a reasonably brisk pace for around 45 minutes and not have any underlying health issues.

Brown added that the program is carefully structure starting with walking and running sessions.

“The key is to gradually increase the running intervals while reducing the walk breaks as slowly but surely the participants build their stamina and running ability.”

The Mother’s Day Run offers both competitive and recreational courses. The 10k run is for runners only that takes participants on groomed trails through Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. Awards will be presented to the first three finishers in a five year age category.

The 5K run/walk takes participants along the road and some trail in the Englishman River Estuary. Awards will be presented to the first three participants to cross the finish line. Both runs start at 10 a.m.

For those interested in taking part in the running clinic, registration is $40 which includes the race entry fee for those who want to take part in the Mother’s Day Run.
