January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard month at resorts across North America, and Mount Washington Alpine Resort is participating by offering half price Discover Skiing and Discover Snowboarding lessons between Jan. 11-15. This all-inclusive program offers a two-hour lesson, a lift ticket for the beginner area, and rental equipment.
“Learning to ski or snowboard should be a very rewarding experience, our certified Snow School instructors and beginner-friendly terrain play a big part in making it easy,” noted Mike Manara, Director of Snow School at Mount Washington Alpine Resort.
“All of our instructors are fully certified, with either the Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance, the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors or both. The instruction we offer is of the highest calibre and our aim is to see the student linking turns and having fun after their first lesson.”
Easy Acres, a multi-million dollar beginner terrain project at Mount Washington, was completed in 2012. The resort now boasts five Magic Carpet conveyor lifts, making it one of the easiest places to learn to ski and snowboard in North America. Magic Carpets, similar to moving walkways you would see at an airport, are widely recognized as one of the best methods for getting beginner skiers and boarders up the slopes.
To give participants the opportunity to reinforce what they have learned, Mount Washington is offering all alpine skiing day tickets and Nordic trail passes at 50 per cent off the following week, Jan. 18-22.
“We want to encourage beginners to take a lesson during the special Discover week and then enjoy their newfound skills,” explains Don Sharpe, Director of Business Operations.
Peter Gibson, Mount Washington’s General Manager, has been at the resort for more than 30 years, and he says watching new participants take up the sport is his favourite part of the job. “The great thing about skiing is it doesn’t matter whether you learn as a four year old or as a 40 year old, you can do it at any age. We even have a number of people up here skiing well into their 80s.”
Gibson explains why this is good time to learn. “We have had outstanding conditions so far this year, and now that the holidays have come to an end and the crowds are gone, it is the perfect time to come up, enjoy the snow, and take advantage of these great deals.”
