Seventeen members of the Liquid Lightning Swim Club competed at the BC AAA Provincial Championships this past weekend. The team came home with 38 personal best times, 7 medals, 2 new Age Group qualifiers, 8 individual club records and 4 relay club records.
Liz Aguiar and Danielle Douglas punched their tickets to the Canadian Age Group Championships later this month in Montreal. Aguiar swam a qualifying time in both the 200 meter individual medley (2:27.62) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:18:04). Douglas swam a qualifying time of 1:08.45 in 100 meter backstroke.
The team came home with seven medals: Kierra Smith won two Gold (200 IM, 100 breast) and one Silver (200 breast). David Dimitrov won Gold in 100 butterfly. Alex Diaz won Silver in 1500 freestyle. Craig Mathieson won Bronze in 100 breast. The girls relay team of Danielle Douglas, Kierra Smith, Christina Russo, and Jessica Forbes won Silver in the 400 medley relay and set a new club record.
Other swimmers that placed in the top eight positions included: Lucas Tyler, Jessica Forbes, Liz Aguiar, Chantelle Douglas, Danielle Douglas and Christina Russo. All together the club placed 4th in six races; 5th in two races; 6th in five races; 7th in 4 races, and 8th in five races.
Eight individual club records were broken. In the Boys 13-14 category, Lucas Tyler set five new club records: 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 back. In the Boys 15 & Over category, Alex Diaz set a new club record for the 1500 free and David Dimitrov set new records in 100 breast and 100 free.
In the Girls Open Category, a new 800 free relay time was set by teammates Kierra Smith, Danielle Douglas, Christina Russo, and Liz Aguiar. In the Boys Open category, new club records were set in both the 400 free and 400 medley relays by teammates David Dimitrov, Scott Andreen, Lucas Tyler, and Craig Mathieson.
Kate Aguiar, Scott Andreen, Chantelle Douglas, Lacey Falkingham, Lauren Fauchon, Jessica Forbes and Christina Russo had personal best times.

AquaJets…
The Kelowna AquaJets had 9 swimmers representing the team this past weekend for the BC AAA Championships held at UBC pool in Vancouver. The meet hosted almost 700 competitors and over 40 teams from around the province.
It was a hot weekend in and out of the pool with highs reaching close to thirty and a lot of exciting racing from the local team. Coaches Peter Wilkins and Cody Hitchcock could not have been happier with the results from the weekend. “The swimmers put in remarkable efforts over the 5 days, showing a lot of character, and a lot of maturity” explains Wilkins. Highlighting the weekend were 8 new club records. Sam McDonald (14) lowered his own in the 50 and 100 Breast in times of 33.55 and 1:13.73, grabbing a bronze medal in the 100. Both of these times, and McDonalds time in the 200 Breast (2:43.96) qualify him for Age Group Nationals in Montreal in 2 weeks time. Teammate Julien Roberts (15) also earned his third standard in the 100 Fly in a time of 1:00.11 while smashing the Mens 15-17 record set by Peter Fagan in 1987 by over 2 seconds. This swim earned Roberts a Bronze medal.
Josh Zakala (15) also took down two records in one swim with his 200 Breast time of 2:34.13 breaking two Roland Bauhart records set in 1996 for Mens 15-17 and Open age category. The three boys and Cameron Feil (16) teamed up to break two records in the relay events for the Open age category 4×200 Free (8:42.4) and the 4×100 Medley (4:26.4). The girls side had a record of their own in the 4×100 Free (4:32.7) consisting of Katie Dunlop (14), Molly Hill (11), Axana Merckx (12) and Clarisse Obedkoff (13).
On the Monday following the pool competition, an Open Water event was hosted in Abbotsford with 6 Jets competing in 2 or 3 or 5 km events. The Jets had 11 trips to the podium over the course of both competitions. Zakala lead the charge taking a gold in the Men’s 3km, along with 4 bronze in 100 Free and Back, 200 Breast and 400 IM. Roberts was able to grab a silver in the 3km Open Water behind Zakala, and a bronze in the 100 Fly.
Hill earned a silver in the same event, the 100 Fly in a time of 1:15.0 just moments before Roberts.
Obedkoff had her moment in the 200 Fly with an exciting 2:35 good for a bronze. McDonald took bronze in the 100 Breast and Tia Itterman (15) added another in the Women’s 3km on Monday.
