LMG hangs on to beat Mid Isle

Two wins in a row for Cowichan FC

Cowichan LMG head coach Glen Martin feels his team needs to take a few lessons from their most recent Div. 1 soccer game, despite the positive result.

“We did the job,” Martin said about his team’s 3-1 win over the Mid Isle Mariners at the Sherman Road turf on Sunday afternoon. “That’s about all I can say about that. We did enough to win.”

From the early going, Cowichan had chances to bury the Mariners, but didn’t jump on them.

“It was a tough game,” Martin said. “I don’t know why. We didn’t score on our chances when we got them, and that keeps the other team in it.”

Cowichan dominated the first half in terms of possession and opportunities, but Colin Knight was the only player to find the net. Blaze Roberts scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the second half, but Cowichan struggled to do any further damage, making it a little scary when the Mariners scored, seemingly out of nowhere, to make it 2-1. Logan Kits later scored his second of the year to give his team some insurance.

“We’re having trouble with 2-0 leads for some reason,” Martin said. “We’ve got to make it 3-0. Usually the third goal is the killer goal. We’ve got to learn from that. We’ve either got to go into lockdown mode at 2-0 or go get it and make it 3-0.”

In addition to scoring, Knight had a good game in the Cowichan midfield, while Govinda Innes, Luca Klotz and Kevan Brown also had strong showings.

The win was Cowichan’s second in a row after a draw and a loss to start the season. LMG now sits fourth in the league, three points out of first place. The team will visit Gorge at Hampton Park this Friday.

“It’s always tough at Hampton Park,” Martin said. “It’s a worn-out field, the lights aren’t good… there’s definitely a home field advantage. But we’ve played there enough. Our history is good.”
