It didn’t just rain, it poured for BlackMonday in the A Tier final of the Comox Valley Sports & Social Club’s ultimate Frisbee league.
The skies opened up at Mark Isfeld Field Monday, just in time to alter the playing conditions and add a heavy dose of uncharacteristic “dropsies” to the final night of the ultimate playoffs. Tightly contested games and some spectacular ultimate still emerged from the wet conditions, though the previously undefeated juggernaut of BlackMonday finally felt the sting of defeat at the most inopportune time.
The largely Campbell River crew that makes up Loaf and has played together for a couple of years – including through much uglier weather in the winter – managed the disc well and pulled off the 15-12 victory to take first place against BlackMonday. Meanwhile, Flight was piecing together their own incredible game on the neighbouring field, trudging back from a 7-3 deficit to win 15-11 over the Huckstables and secure third overall. And in the fifth place final, A Thousand Monkeys surged ahead early and held on to win 15-6 over Discs of Hazzard.
In the B Tier final, a tremendous back-and-forth game saw the Disclexics overcome an early deficit to win 15-13 over Yeah It Is and take first place on the more recreational side of the bracket. The Spring Flings defeated the Backhanded Compliments to finish in third spot.
