Local athletes excel at B.C. track and field championships

Comox Valley student-athletes were in great form at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships.

Tyler Kostiuk, a Grade 11 student from Highland Secondary School, captured the provincial championship in javelin at the meet, held this past weekend in Langley. Tyler’s spectacular final throw of 57.20m (187 feet, 6 inches) cemented his first place finish.

Other Highland students competing at the track meet included Chloe Gummer, who placed 15th in the 400m with a time of 1:00.64. Highland’s 4x100m relay team (Elizabeth Gummer, Chloe Gummer, Shayla Phillips and Tayler Morton) placed 10th with a time of 52.07. Hayley Bezanson, from Mark Isfeld Secondary School, placed 18th in the 400m with a time of 1:02.14.

Mark Maurer, a Grade 10 student from Vanier Secondary School, was also on the podium.  He came in second place in the long jump with a jump of 6.65m. He also competed in the high jump, placing 17th with a jump of 1.75m.

Other Vanier students included Emalee Vandermale, who placed 12th in javelin with a throw of 29.64m, and  Sydney Vandermale, who placed 10th in the hammer throw with a throw of 37.33m.  Vanier also had a Grade 8/9 4x400m relay team (Haley Smith, Shyanna Walters, Sophia Funk, and Sophie Murray), which placed 16th with a time of 4:46:03.

 

“Many thanks to all the coaches, parents and volunteers who have helped make this a very successful track and field season for the Comox Valley high schools,” a spokesperson said.
