Fourteen-year-old Houston Secondary student Taylor Beck plays almost every sport she can get her hands on, and her specialty is hockey.

“I’ve skated all my life,” said Taylor, adding that she’s played ringette since she was little and played hockey since grade five.

Early this month, Taylor and Northwest region team won the B.C. Cup in the U16 Female Bantum Tournament.

“It’s the best girls hockey in my age group,” Taylor said.

“[Winning] was really cool because we are the first Northern team to ever win that tournament,” she added.

Out of six regional teams – two from the Lower Mainland, one from Vancouver, a Kootenays North team and an Okanagan North team – the Northwestern team took the win, playing five hard and fast games in the Duncan tournament April 4 to 7, said Taylor.

Taylor says she tried out in January against 54 other girls grades 8 and 9, from Prince Rupert to 100 Mile House and up to Chetwynd.

She was one of the 20 girls to play on the Northwestern team, and she says it was pretty exciting.

“It was a lot different than what I’ve usually played in… it was a lot faster because it was a whole bunch of the best girls around B.C. playing,” said Taylor.

“It was a lot faster speed, but it was a lot of fun,” she said.

Taylor says she likes playing sports and being active, and she really really liked playing hockey.

She also played hockey in the Winter Games last year, she said.

“I really like playing team sports because I like being with people and connecting and making new friends and stuff,” she said.

Taylor says she plays most of the sports that she can including hockey, basketball, volleyball, rugby, and soccer, and when she can, ringette.

Taylor says she’s not sure how next year will shape up, as she moves into the under 18 category and Houston doesn’t have a rep team, but she hopes to play university or college hockey in the future.

“I’m planning to keep playing hockey,” she said.
