The Ogopogo Invitational Gymnastics meet held in beautiful Kelowna on June 8 and 9 was the last competition of the season for Kitimat gymnasts.
The competition is named after a legendary sea monster said to haunt Lake Okanagan, not unlike Scotland’s Loch Ness monster.
Kitimat sent four athletes: Lily Sherman, Maggie Baker, Mya Anthony and Addison Pitzel with head coach Angela Pitzel at the helm. These gymnasts came home laden with medals and awards!
On Saturday, two Kitimat gymnasts competed in the Junior Olympic level 6 category. Lily Sherman, just coming back from injury, received the gold medal on floor, 5th on vault, 5th on bars, 7th beam and 5th all around. Maggie Baker received the silver on floor, bronze on vault, bronze on bars, 4th on beam and silver all around.
Later in the day, in the JO 7 session, Mya Anthony received gold on floor, 4th on vault, silver on bars, bronze on beam and gold all around. Mya brings home the much-coveted Ogopogo stuffed animal, awarded to the gymnast who finishes top in her session. She also received the judges’ choice floor award.
Day two was another success – Addison Pitzel won a bronze on vault, 6th on bars, silver on beam, 10th on floor and 5th all around.
These young ladies did fantastically and we are really proud of them! This competition is great because the pressure leading up to provincials if off. It’s a fun meet and it gives the girls the chance to really showcase what they’ve been working on all year long.
Now the athletes will prepare for the year-end display and wind up celebrations, after which it’s onto summer training to set goals for the upcoming 2019/2020 season.
We are grateful for the support received through the District of Kitimat travel grant and the wider community for its continued support of our fundraisers.
