Luckies to play Braves in benefit games

A Houston Luckies and Burns Lake Braves double-header is promising some great hockey for a good cause.

A match-up between the Houston Luckies and Burns Lake Braves is promising some great hockey for a good cause.

All proceeds from the double-header will go towards the Lakes District Tragedy Fund for victims of the Jan. 20 sawmill fire.

“They’re like our brother town,” says Luckies president Alonzo Slaney.

“We’ve got to help them get a boost back up.”

Most of the Braves either put up their skates or joined other CIHL teams for the 2011/2012 season, but Burns Lake should have no trouble fielding a full  bench for a Luckies match.

“Lots of our guys have played with guys who worked at the mill and became good friends,” said Slaney.

Slaney spoke to the Houston Today last Friday from the floor of a jobs fair in Burns Lake. Crowded with job seekers and employers’ booths, Slaney said the  event seemed to do the trick for at least one friend.

“He filled out a resumé and then they told him straight away, ‘Hey, the boss wants to talk to you.’”

Game one in the series will be played Feb. 24 at the Tom Forsyth arena in Burns Lake. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Houston will host game two Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Claude  Parish arena.

Tickets for both games are $8 for adults, $5 for kids. Houston will also run a 50/50 raffle and a paper planes contest—for a twoonie, contestants can fold their own paper plane and take aim at several prizes on the ice.

Volunteers who want to help out are invited to call Alonzo Slaney in Houston or Wes Hart in Burns Lake. Donations to the Lakes District Tragedy Fund can also be made through any CIBC bank branch or at www.rotaryburnslake.org.
