Lumby Stars dominate home ice

Midget girls squad undefeated in six games to win gold at home hockey tournament

The Lumby Midget Stars are a classic hockey squad on home ice.

For the second straight year, the Stars captured their own Monashee Classic tournament, and went undefeated in six games for the second year in a row.

Weekend highlights for the Stars saw Jordyn Prior score her first-ever goal; Paige McLaughlin got her first goal as a Star; and goalie Tyra Cunningham played 2.5 games without allowing a single goal against.

Every player for the Stars had a goal or an assist.

Game MVPs were Mia Maltman, Emma Roine, Kalen Webster, Josey Nerling, Jordyn Morris and Somer Snobelen. Teammates include Tyra Cunningham, Pryor, Tori Maltman, Nerling, Emily Romailler, Mia Maltman, Shaina Jones, Roine, Faith Seehaver, Josie Sexsmith, Kim Whitelaw, McLaughlin, Payton Kineshanko, Vanessa Yaremcio, Lily Fiset, Kendra Jones, Morris, Webster and Snobelen.

The Stars are coached by Jon Kineshanko, Chris Pryor, Bryan McLaughlin and Ali Roine.

BANTAM

Lumby Stars, sponsored by Great West Equipment, brought home the gold medal from a weekend tournament in Osoyoos.

Game MVP Quintin O’Neill scored his third goal of the game with 10 seconds left as Lumby defeated Semiahmoo of White Rock 3-2 in the final. Tori Maltman received the hard hat for hardest worker.

The Stars went undefeated in the South Okanagan. Lumby opened with an 8-0 win over Kelowna with James Wraight earning the shuout. The Stars got two goals each from Kolby English, game MVP Zachary Young, O’Neill and Tori Maltman. O’Neill earned the hard hat.

O’Neill scored four times to earn MVP honours in a 5-2 win over Cloverdlae. Ryder Quibell hd the other goal while Maltman earned the hard hat.

Wraight secured his second shutout of the tournament plus the hard hat after an 8-0 win over Langley. Riley Dewhirst earned MVP honours. Young scored three times. Mia Maltman and Faith Seehaver added two assists each.

To get to the final, Lumby needed a goal with one second left in regulation from Tori Maltman to beat Grand Forks 7-6. The Stars trailed 6-4 with 10 minutes to go but tied the game on goals from Quibell and O’Neill. Quibell and Tori Maltman shared MVP honours while Jace Catt earned the hard hat.

BANTAM TIER 3

Vernon Geotech Drilling Vipers dropped their only league game on the weekend, falling 3-1 to Kamloops.

Logan Killingbeck scored the lone Vernon goal, set up by Brady Kuziw and Jack Laventure.
