The L.V. Rogers ladies field hockey squad played a hard fought 2–1 win over JL Crowe of Trail on Wednesday.
LVR seemed to control play early on but good strong mid-field play by Crowe made it difficult for the LVR attack to get rolling. LVR did strike first but had a goal disallowed as the shot came from outside the scoring circle.
After a lot of hard work and pressure, the Bombers broke through on nice down low work by Emma Borhi and Hanna Quinn who teed up the ball for Allie Zondervan at the top of the shooting circle, who drilled the ball past the Crowe keeper.
LVR Bombers’ first goal of the game against Trail’s JL Crowe by Allie Zondervan #6 and Noa Butterfield #10.
The game was very even and Crowe came close to tying on a couple of short corners but Bomber goalie Rylee Zondervan shut the door and the Bomber defence cleared any loose balls from the front of the net. Moments after the Crowe pressured the Bombers, quick passing got the ladies out of trouble and working the ball out, Naomi Perkins on the left who controlled the play causing all kinds of trouble for the Crowe defence. Perkins shot on goal was blocked by the Crowe keeper but the rebound fell for rookie Kathi Hayn for the Bombers second goal of the game.
In the second half Crowe pressed hard and the Bomber’s back line was holding its own with good mid-field support. Eventually the Crowe attack paid off as they put one past Bomber goalie Rylee spoiling the shut out.
The final league game of the year gave the ladies a 3–1 record, the only loss coming against JL Crowe.
Next up for the Lady Bombers is a one day event in Oliver on October 17, getting ready for the Kootenay Zone semi-finals on Oct. 19 and if successful, the final on Oct. 20. A win in the finals will equate to a berth to the provincials in Victoria in November.
