LVR’s Matti Erickson takes two gold at track and field provincials

Erickson set a new record in the 1,500 for the third straight year

Nelson’s Matti Erickson extended his dominance for the third straight year at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships.

The L.V. Rogers athlete won two gold medals in Kelowna last week in the 1,500 and 800-metre junior boys races.

Erickson crushed his own provincial mark in the 1,500, which he won for the third consecutive year in three minutes 57.31 seconds last Saturday. His win was a photo finish, as Erickson eked out a victory by just 0.07 seconds ahead of Nanaimo’s Gage Zanette.

Erickson has owned the race since 2017 when he competed as a Trafalgar Middle School student. That year he set a record in 4:12.51, and last year finished in 4:01.36.

On Sunday, he also won the 800 by two seconds. Erickson had previously won silver in the event in 2017 and 2018.

Avie Waterfall, Jasper Ander and Dylan Gyr also competed for LVR at provincials, which included over 2,000 athletes from around B.C.
