The brief tenure of Brian Maloney as Chilliwack Minor Hockey’s Executive Director has come to an end.
Maloney posted a letter to membership on the CMHA website earlier this week, resigning from the paid position after less than two years in the role.
“As many of you know the Executive Director position was brought in to address a number of gaps within the association,” Maloney wrote. “I have been working with the board to identify how CMHA can better address hockey operations and address the large and often vague job requirements of the various roles required to support such a large association.
“I know for many members there was an expectation that this role would offset itself through fundraising led by the role itself. The role was a great idea, however, had a lot of lofty goals that together we have not been able to achieve.
“As CMHA looks to the coming season I have recommended that they discontinue the current role and spend the upcoming season re-envisioning a specific role to address the needs of the community and determine a stable funding stream for it.”
Maloney’s hiring was announced in August of 2016, with a job description that was light on specifics. The CMHA press release at the time said Maloney would ‘help with fundraising and day-to-day operations.’
Maloney saw himself rebuilding business relationships within Chilliwack and in some ways he’s succeeded, but his best work came in the realm of player development.
He helped strengthen ties with the junior A Chilliwack Chiefs, who have partnered with CMHA on several initiatives.
Maloney is currently an assistant coach for the Chiefs and plans to stay in that role.
“I am proud of the work that we have been able to accomplish together and while the initial focus was not coaching and development for this role, this is the work that needs to be focused on within CMHA,” he said in his letter.
Maloney’s departure comes with CMHA set to hike registration fees sharply for the 2018-19 season. CMHA also has several board vacancies including first vice president, female hockey director and secretary.
