The 55+ B.C. Games kicked off on Tuesday, August 25 with over 3,300 athletes competing in North Vancouver in 24 different sports.
There’s plenty of action going around over the four days of competition and plenty of talent from the Parksville Qualicum Beach area taking part as well.
Parksville’s Terry Harrison will be in both the women’s and men and women’s dragon boat race.
Qualicum Beach’s Paul Connor will take to his bike in three events, the men’s time trial, road race and hill climb (65-69 age group).
Qualicum’s Wendy Pearce will be involved with the men’s and women’s floor curling team.
Nanoose Bay’s Norm Bohl will be in action with the men’s 70+ hockey team. Joining him will be Parksville’s Larry Meyers.
Parksville will be well represented on the men’s 65+ hockey team as well, with Cal Hood, Paddy Moore and Dave Williams suiting up.
Peter Kucey of Qualicum Beach will take part in the men’s 65+ horseshoe event.
On the diamond Charles Blakey, Hugh Bohm, Chuck Sardo, Rick Deleau and Rob Hamford, from Parksville, along with Qualicum Beach’s Greg Corbett, Doug Damberger and Ann McVey will be part of the men’s and women’s 55+ mixed slo-pitch team.
Ed Mitchell and Phil Savage, from Qualicum Beach, and Parksville’s Pony Moore will represent the men’s 60-64 slo-pitch team.
Jack Laramie and John Conacher, from Parksville, will play for the men’s 70+ slo-pitch team.
On the soccer pitch, Qualicum Beach’s Terry Brown will take the field with the 55+ soccer team alongside Nanoose Bay’s Keith Watson.
Ian Miller of Qualicum Beach will be the lone representative on the 60+ team.
John Hayley, Rod Morrison, Peter Rowland and Neil Worboys from Qualicum Beach, along with Parksville’s Jim Moore will represent the 65+ team.
Heidi Bromley (Nanoose Bay), Harry Keen (Nanoose Bay), Emmy Matte (Parksville), Joan Nielson (Parksville) and Russell Sharock (Parksville) will all take to the pool in multiple events each.
Qualicum Beach’s Doug Sturgess will take part in the men’s 65-69 doubles tennis event.
Jess Brewer (Nanoose Bay), Joe Giegerich (Nanoose Bay) and Hans Tenor (Qualicum Beach) will all be involved in the track and field events.
