Mariners navigate a tie

Penticton peewee A Mariners secure tie against Summerland in baseball action

Penticton’s peewee A Mariners baseball team completed weekend action with a tie after starting with a loss.

The Mariners are now 2-1-2 after an 8-8 result against Summerland. It was a tight battle between the teams with strong defence and good hitting. Tyler Witkowski hit a triple for the Mariners to bring in two runs and was great defensively as a catcher not allowing many balls to get past him. He also made it difficult for Summerland to steal home. McGarry Allen was strong on the mound for most of the match, then was relieved by Jordan Picheniuk coming in as the closer. Taya Kampe made a great catch playing shortstop to rob Summerland off a double. The Mariners were up by one going into the last inning, but gave up a run and had an out with a runner on second. Zack Wilson made a great double play to keep it tied.

The Mariners started the weekend with an 11-10 loss to the West Kelowna Wolf Pack. The Mariners played strong defence and the bats were going, but they couldn’t fend off the Wolf Pack. The Mariners are third in B.C. Minor Baseball. The coaching staff is happy with the team’s progress in the short time they have been together. The most improved player so far has been Angus Bews.
