Softball isn’t just a summer sport.

That much was obvious as costume-clad competitors rounded the bases for the 2020 iteration of the annual Snowpitch Tournament. The annual deep-snow sporting event returned to Sicamous’ Finlayson Park on Jan. 18 and 19.

When the last player had crossed home plate through some of the deepest snow the tournament has ever seen, prizes were given out for both skill on the diamond and the effort that went into creating costumes.

In first place for the tournament was team Where’s Waldo, out of Kelowna won a pontoon boat rental while in second place, the local team Siiick Mooses, earned themselves a wine tour. Legends Never Die from Salmon Arm’s third place finish was good enough to get them free entry into next year’s tournament and the fourth place Toy Story, also from Salmon Arm, got Snowpitch plaques for their walls.

A team from Vernon who showed up in Mario-themed costumes won themselves a houseboat rental for being the best-dressed in the tournament, while team “Bunch of Dicks,” from the North Shuswap earned second-place honours in the costume contest and some time on a pontoon boat.

John Hesk of Vernon, who came dressed as Captain Hook, had the best individual costume and won a stay at a local bed and breakfast.
