The 45-plus Comox Valley masters men’s soccer team kicked off the 2012/13 outdoor season with a 6-3 win Sunday in Nanaimo.
The host side opened a 2-0 lead in the first half but goals from Ash Mohtadi and Roy Tufnail evened the score at halftime. The second goal finished a fine buildup that started in the Comox Valley end.
Nanaimo regained the lead early in second stanza, but the Valley boys struck back quickly on a goal from Dennis Mirabelli.
Mohtadi added two more goals, one on a feed from Mirabelli and another on a breakaway.
Phil Statham rounded out the scoring with a header off a corner kick.
Goalkeeper Daniel Terry stopped a penalty shot late in the game.
