Civic pride will be on the line – and on the ice – when Comox mayor Paul Ives faces off against Courtenay mayor Greg Phelps in the Mayors’ Cup.
Game time is 6 a.m. Monday, March 14 at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena No. 1. Joining the mayors for the early-morning hockey game will be local luminaries such as Mike “Slapshot” Scott, Steve Stewart, Ross Jameson, “The Blind Guy” (a reference to his profession, not a reflection of his goaltending ability) and event organizer Dr. Paul Helpard.
Helpard is an orthodontist at Shoreline Orthodontics in Courtenay who is involved with Spring for Kids BC, a Canadian non-profit organization that supports children with cleft and craniofacial disorders by providing funding for education, research, surgical missions and the continued care of patients and their families.
Spring for Kids BC is participating in the Pepsi Refresh Contest. Every other month, Pepsi is giving away up to $200,000 in grants to fund great ideas that can make a positive impact in the community. Spring for Kids is competing in the $100,000 grant level, and to win, they need to have the most online votes in their grant level.
The Mayors’ Cup is designed to raise awareness of Spring for Kids BC’s participation in the Pepsi Refresh Contest, and voting booths will be set up at the Sports Centre. Those dropping by to cheer the mayors on can also enjoy breakfast as the concession will be open. To vote online, and for more information about the campaign, go to www.springforkidsbc.com.
“This event is a fun way for us to let everyone know that they can make a difference simply by voting once a day, every day,” said Helpard. “We’re currently ranked fifth, and after this event, we’re expecting that votes from the community of Courtenay will push Spring for Kids up in the rankings.”
Kathy Campbell of Shoreline Orthodontics notes people are encouraged to vote every day from now until April 30. As an added incentive, there are weekly draw prizes of movie passes and a grand prize of an iPad. “The more you vote, the more likely you are to win,” the Spring for Kids BC website notes.
