With no fights currently on the horizon in Canada, Williams Lake pro boxer Stuart McLellan is taking his talents to Mexico once again for his fifth international contest.
The 30-year-old fighter, who has a 17-win, two-loss and three-draw record and is the Canadian Professional Boxing Council superwelterweight 154-pound champion, will be taking on Gerardo Esquivel (7-20-1) on Jan. 28 at the Salon de Usos Multiples in Ocotlan, Jalisco.
“It’s a stay busy fight for sure,” McLellan told the Tribune. “Nothing is going on in Canada and most of the guys want too much money.”
While his opponent has lost his last six fights, McLellan said he isn’t taking anything for granted.
“Take nothing for granted,” he said. “The last time I was down there my opponent ended up going the distance with me.
“If they get momentum it can be hard to shut them down.”
McLellan will be travelling to Mexico with a team of Canadian fighters — two from his Teofista Boxing camp and another two from Ontario.
“That’s nice to have that team mentality there,” he said. “You’re there with other guys doing the same thing.”
McLellan, who is on a five-fight winning streak, said the ultimate goal is to get a TV fight in the U.S.
“There’s also potentially a fight coming up in April in Calgary or Edmonton, but not sure yet,” he said. “There are offers coming up from the U.S. but we’re kind of biding our time and waiting for the right one.”
McLellan added if any individual or business is interested in sponsoring him he can be reached at mclellanstuart1@gmail.com.
