Melanie Grant has contended at many golf tournaments over the years, but it wasn’t until this fall that the Kelowna woman finally walked away with a major tournament title.
Grant carded a tournament-best 73 in the second round this week to capture the Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur in Renton, Wash.
Grant recovered nicely from an opening round 83 to edge Eugene, Oregon’s Leilani Norman by two strokes.
“What did it for me today was my putting and my short game, I was able to get up and down I sunk a few long putts and I drove the ball steady,” said Grant. “It was good…I was happy.”
The Kelowna Golf and Country Club member was coming off a strong summer of golf, as she tied for sixth at the Alberta seniors, 13th at the B.C. seniors, and was 22nd at the Canadian senior women’s championship.
“I’ve never won a championship like this before, this is my first,” she said. “I’ve been fortunate to have the experience of playing in those tournaments. It’s been a great year.”
The tournament featured B.C. players such as Jackie Little, Alison Murdoch and Phyllis Laschuk, all of whom have won B.C. championships in the past.
