The Mount Elizabeth Track and Field team went to Zones in Smithers on May 21 this year and did itself proud.

This year’s short season -well you just can’t do track ’til the snow’s gone! – combined with an inexperienced team might have led observers to have low expectations.

Not so!

Caleb Burke took first in shot put. Brendon Sorenson was first in the 100m hurdles and 2nd in High Jump.

Justine Morin was 2nd in the 400 metres and achieved her personal best in the long jump.

Cody Burkit  picked up a 3rd in triple jump.

Mathias Tait got a 3rd in discus.

And Lucas Galimini led the Junior boys to a first place finish in the 4 x 100m relay.

Ben Thorne is the only race walker left in this zone, so racing against the clock to qualify for provincials, he unofficially took 10 seconds off the provincial record.

On June 2, in a field of a dozen walkers at the provincials, Thorne  (photo above) took 20 seconds off the provincial record, covering 1500m in 5:34:17, a full minute and a half ahead of the 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

He was in the Nationals over the weekend trying to qualify for the Junior Pan American Games.

Many thanks to coaches Cynthia Cridge, Allanah Unrau, Ben Unrau, Chris Taylor and Zack Blaine.
