Salmon Arm Midget rec hockey provided some fast moving, entertaining action this past weekend as the co-host of a 12-team tournament.
Attending were several teams from Kamloops and Kelowna, along with Semiahmoo from Surrey, Cochrane, Alta. and Langley.
Salmon Arm Midget Rec 2 started Friday night against Kelowna 6 and was able to hold their ground well through the first and second periods.
As Salmon Arm took on more penalties, Kelowna pulled away halfway through the period to take the game 4-1.
Local fans were slightly nervous early Saturday morning as Kamloops took control quickly with three goals in the first period.
It was just the wake-up call Salmon Arm needed as the team found their groove and fought back in the second period with a goal each from Cole Salewski and Dylan McBeth.
Salmon Arm kept up the pressure, and with twelve minutes left in the third period, Ethan Senger brought the game to a tie.
With only minutes left, Dylan Eckland and McBeth ramped it up with one goal each.
Kamloops squeezed in one goal in the final 42 seconds, ending an exciting game at 5-4 for Salmon Arm.
Saturday night’s game saw a close contest between Salmon Arm and Cochrane.
Despite penalties, Salmon Arm was able to maintain great control of the play and stayed in the game with a final score of 3-3.
Team spirit continued into early Sunday morning against Kamloops.
By the end of the second period, Salmon Arm was leading 2-1 with goals from Eckland and Nick Dueck.
There was no letting up in the third period; Jackson Mount and Jordon Fournier added two more goals.
Kamloops scored in the final three minutes but Salmon Arm held on with a healthy lead, 4-2.
Kelowna 3 took away the tournament championship, and Salmon Arm Midget Rec 2, sponsored by Blackburn Excavating, came in a very respectable seventh place with two wins, one tie and one loss.
