Midget Rockets win home tourney

Kelowna's tier 2 squad goes unbeaten in five games to take top spot

The Kelowna tier 2 midget Rockets won all five games to claim the championship trophy at their hometown tournament over the weekend.

The hosts opened up with a 8-0 drubbing of the Langley Eagles, as Nick Robbins claimed MVP honours with a hat trick performance. Goalie Gio Sambrielaz  earned the shutout. The Rockets followed that up with a tight fought 3-2 win over the North Vancouver Midget Storm.  Affiliated Player Eric Noh contributed a key goal in a strong effort and was named game MVP. In the final round robin game,  Rockets MVP Murray Gaffney scored the winner to help erase a two-goal deficit as Kelowna skated to a 4-2 win over the Prince George Cougars.  That set up the semi-final match with their cross lake rivals the West Kelowna Warriors, with the Rockets prevailing by a 4-1 tally.  The championship game went down to the wire against Smithers until Grant Dollevoet banged in a loose puck with just 1:35 left in the third period as the Rockets eked out a 1-0 victory. The tier 2 midget Rockets have now won two cups in a row after a first place finish in a tournament last weekend in Jasper, Alta.

The team members are: Jordan Reynolds, Jackson Fulton, Drayton Martin, Brandon Palik, Ryan Pereverzoff, Nicolas Robbins, Colton Horne, Grant Dollevoet, Jack Gilchrist, Giovanni Sambrielaz, Joel Scrimbit, Landon Horne, Josh Gaal, Brett Witala, Murray Gaffney, Stephen Hawes, Spencer Copan, Nate Higgins, Parker Armstrong.  The head coach is Brent Gilchrist and assistants are Gavin Mulcahy and Andrew Malashewsky.
