Oceanside forward Jarrett Weme goes to the net during his team’s regular season opening win over the Comox Chiefs.

It’s early in the campaign but Oceanside’s Midget Rep Generals looked good out of the gate.

The Generals opened their regular season at Meeker Arena recently with a well-earned 4-1 win over the Comox Chiefs.

All Oceanside from the opening whistle and out of the gate for their first of 24 league games, the Generals went at the Chiefs in waves.

Captain Jordan Freeman “played a great game” netting a goal and two assists.

Fellow forward Luke Russi fed the net, and defensemen Dale Anderson and Austin Gibson each scored great goals from the point.

“They were hard shots,” said Generals head coach Matt Woods.

And with Mitchell MacDonald and Erik Carney on the sheet with an assist each “it was nice to see the points spread out through the team.

Hayden Kellet was in net for the win.

“I was really proud of how the boys played their home opener,” said Woods. “We played as a team, moved the puck well and out-shot our opponents 38-15.  We have a long road ahead of us to prepare for the playoffs but the coaching staff, Glenn Gibson, Jim Hykaway and myself are really excited about this years midget team. They have a lot of potential to do very well this season,” he said of the squad, which competes in the seven team Tier 2 Island league. “As long as they believe in their abilities and work hard as a team, we believe that we can be very successful this season.”

Back home on Sunday the Generals lost 5-3 to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in an exhibition game.

“We came out flat this game and took too many penalties,” said coach Woods, pointing out four of Cowichan’s five goals were scored on the power play.

“Hard to win games when half a period is spent short-handed.”

Freeman had a goal and helper in that game; MacDonald and Austin Hykaway scored a goal each, and Liam Downey and Kurtis Woods had assists.
