Guests and industry members have been impressed with the proactive approach to backcountry safety taken by Sun Peaks Resort with the addition of their new off-piste education camps. On a recent trip to Sun Peaks, Mike Wiegele of the world famous powder skiing mecca based near Blue River, B.C., decided to donate a day of heli skiing to one lucky camp participant to recognize Sun Peaks’ dedication to off-piste safety.
“Beyond the Groomers” is a three day camp focused on off-piste skiing technique on steeps, deeps, trees and bumps. The “All Mountain Skills Camp” is a two day experience promoting safety and awareness of mountain hazards through terrain assessment, hazard analysis, overnight survival, and companion rescue. Skiers have the option to choose between the two camps or enroll in both for a comprehensive, back-to-back, five day educational experience.
Developer of the All Mountain Skills Camp and Professional Canadian Ski Guide, Bodie Shandro, says he’s received positive feedback from camp participants this winter.
“These camps are invaluable for all ages and abilities that venture off groomed ski runs,” says Shandro. “Safety is our top priority. This is achieved by developing an awareness of mountain hazards and promoting good decision making and preparedness in terms of skills, equipment and attitude!”
Shandro is also a guide at Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing (MWH) just 2.5 hours north of Sun Peaks. Sun Peaks has a long standing relationship with Mike Wiegele’s, offering a warm-up package for guests to get their ski legs at the resort before tackling the towering peaks of MWH’s 1.2 million acres of terrain. The addition of these new camps to the roster improves this offer exponentially, offering the perfect preparation experience so skiers can make the most of their time with MWH.
The winner will be drawn from all camp participants and contacted at the end of the 2014-15 winter season. For more information on these and other guided private opportunities to explore and learn about Sun Peaks’ off-piste terrain, please call 250-578-5505 or visitwww.SunPeaksResort.com/School.
