Team BC will play for gold in Red Deer

Mill Bay’s Seiya Tanaka-Campbell has been named to Team BC for the upcoming 2019 Canada Winter Games male hockey tournament.

Tanaka-Campbell, a forward with Shawnigan Lake School’s midget prep team, endured a rigorous tryout process to make the team, beginning with regional camps last March, followed by the U16 BC Cup tournament in Salmon Arm in April, and the provincial camp at Shawnigan Lake in July.

The team will meet for a camp this weekend, with the Canada Winter Games taking place in Red Deer, Alberta, from Feb. 16-22.

This is the third consecutive B.C. entry at the Canada Winter Games team that will include representation from the Cowichan Valley. Duncan’s Steen Cooper helped Team BC to gold in 2011, and Nolan Kneen was on the team in 2015. Chemainus’s Doug Bodger also won gold with Team BC in 1979.

Two players from Shawnigan’s female prep team are on the shortlist for B.C.’s Canada Winter Games female team: forward Megan Bouveur (Victoria) and goalie Kiara Stecko (Kelowna).
