Coming off a season that saw the peewee Reds AA program win the provincial championship on home soil, Oceanside Minor Baseball has scheduled its annual general meeting and awards presentation for Monday, Nov. 7, at Quality Inn Bayside in Parksville.
Kirk Walper, who coached in the peewee house league as well as teaming with Rob McGorman and Greg Donkersley to guide the Reds to the provincial title, was named Coach of the Year for 2016.
The association’s Umpire of the Year Awards go to Sean Brendeland, Jarrod Dykstra and Tanner Strandberg.
The AGM, which begins at 7 p.m., will include election of the executive board for the 2017 season, presentation of awards to the outstanding achievement recipients, and a draw for free registration for all players in the immediate family of one attendee.
Outgoing volunteers Angela Hinz and Sheila Williams will be recognized for their years of service to the organization, and both have agreed to work with their successors in training for the volunteer positions.
A number of board and volunteer positions are open, and new volunteers are encouraged to consider nomination for spots including registrar co-ordinator, umpire co-ordinator and sponsor co-ordinator.
Highlights of the 2016 season for Oceanside Minor Baseball include hosting of the Peewee AA Provincial Championships and the Reds’ run to the title; the completion of the grassy outfield pavilion behind the main peewee field — just in time for provincials — the addition of a North Island Royals bantam AA program, which has drawn 13 association members to fall ball; and the hosting of an Island-wide Tadpole (U-9) jamboree in July.
