The Golden Minor Hockey A/B squad is hosting a round-robin tournament this weekend, with teams from Airdrie, Banff, Canal Flats travelling to Golden to participate in the action. The tournament will run on Saturday March 5th from 8 am to 4:30 pm. The event is also meant to be a fundraiser for the team and will include a bake sale, 50/50 and raffle table. Prizes include a Calgary Hitmen jacket, Calgary Hitmen Tickets, a signed Kootenay Ice Stick, a signed Vancouver Canucks Picture, a signed Calgary Flames T-shirt and a  Roots Canada Jacket.he A/B squad, also referred fondly to as “Our Future Rockets”, started last year as a group of 30 four to six year olds. Parents and coaches agreed that they were still too young at this point to participate in tournaments and they focused on teaching the kids how to skate and the game of hockey.Although there are fewer participants this year, the team is now older, stronger and ready to play the game. They have already played games in Revelstoke and Canal Flats.“The group now is more of a core squad,” said Mark Baxendale, parent and coach of the team. “They’re a year older now, they skate better and their play is really developing.”Last weekend, the team was invited to Revelstoke to play a demonstration game. “After a hard winter for Revelstoke where several visiting teams had either been unable to participate or withdrawn from events due to bad weather conditions over the pass, we received a hearty welcome from the coaching staff and player alike,” said Baxendale. “It took us awhile to find our game legs but eventually got into the swing of it and we found it invaluable ice time in preparation for our forthcoming home tournament.”Baxendale sends a big thanks to all the players and families that made the trip and made the most of the day in Revelstoke by having brunch at the golf club and then later during a visit to the pool. Come out and support your future Rockets this weekend at their home tournament, after all, it won’t be long before they’re six feet tall and sporting the real Rockets jerseys.
