A number of Mission boxers performed in their debut bouts this past weekend, while the more seasoned local fighters dominated the Emerald Gloves competition.
The Mission City Boxing Club hosted the event June 24 and 25, which saw Jacob Chalkais, Johnny Chalkais, Robby Anger and Brennan Patterson compete for the first time.
Two-time Canadian champion, 14-year-old Cody Brown, battled Loui Campegpangan from Queensborough Boxing Club, and despite being three years younger and seven pounds lighter, won the 17-11 decision.
Leeland Oostenbrink, 16, fought Vernon’s Santiago Abrega, and put on a strong fight, said head coach Dale Gatin. Oostenbrink earned the win with a 12-3 decision.
The closest fight of the night went to Matt McIntosh, 20, as he went up against Gurrinder Khabra from New Westminster. After the second round, McIntosh was trailing two points, but rallied in the third to sneak past 7-6.
Bout of the night honours went to the Fred Jones and Zach Thomas tilt.
Both boxers were heavy hitters and traded shots each round, but by the third Thomas’ cardio caught up with him and Jones started to make headway which resulted in the 21-10 win.
