Mission Cedar Kings win in shootout

Kings take down Queensborough 6-5 to improve to 3-0

The Mission Cedar Kings did something on Saturday that the franchise has never done – win a game via shootout.

The lacrosse club earned a 6-5 win over the Queensborough River Rats in Port Coquitlam on Saturday, and remain undefeated in West Central Senior C Lacrosse League action.

The teams were tied at two after one, but the River Rats jumped ahead to lead 5-3 after 40 minutes. The third period was all Mission, as John Makowsky scored on the power play to make it a one-goal game and then Gavan Sand scored with just six seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The clubs played four-on-four for five minutes, but that solved nothing, and the teams went to the shootout. Sand was denied, but Cedar Kings players Tony Corbin and Ethan Goodman scored to give Mission the win.

Sand and Steve Aldcroft led the way with two goals apiece, while Makowsky added one. Both Cody Thompson and Josh Veres collected three assists, and Jim Nishiyama contributed with one helper. Goalie Jeff Lissimore made 29 saves for the win.

The Cedar Kings are tied for first in the WCSCLL with a perfect record of 3-0. The team next takes on the Richmond Roadrunners (0-3) in Port Coquitlam on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
