A defensive battle saw the Mission Roadrunners senior varsity football team come up on the short end of the stick on Friday.
The Roadrunners hosted the Terry Fox Ravens, and a lone touchdown in the third quarter sealed the visitors a 6-0 win.
Turnovers were a deciding factor in the game, as both the Roadrunners and Ravens gave away the ball deep in each other’s end.
Mission had a glorious chance to get on the board in the second quarter, but fumbled on first-and-goal at the Ravens’ eight-yard line.
Mission also had an opportunity on the game’s final drive, but a pass that would have put the Roadrunners inches away from scoring was ruled incomplete.
The Roadrunners were led defensively by stud defensive end Cody McMahon, who collected six tackles and two sacks. Despite the goose egg on the scoreboard, the Roadrunners still managed 252 yards rushing with Saxon Kernahan running for 157. Kernahan also grabbed an interception on defence.
Mission drops to 1-3 on the season, and the club sits tied for sixth in the AAA’s Eastern Conference.
The Roadrunners next travel to Kelowna to take on the 2-2 Owls. That game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Mission Roadrunners junior varsity team also lost to the Ravens, falling 31-6 in Mission on Oct. 10.
The juniors drop to 0-2 in regular-season play, and remain in fourth place in the AAA’s East Division.
Mission hosted Handsworth on Oct. 17, but results were not available at press time. The juniors then host the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers on Oct. 24. That game kicks off at 3:45 p.m.
