The Mission Roadrunners are flying high early into the B.C. high school football season, and after a big 42-8 win over the Mt. Boucherie Bears on Saturday, the club is off to its best start as a AAA school.
Mission’s ground game was on display on Saturday in Kelowna, as Keegan Royal picked up 117 yards and one major and Matt Roadhouse added 113 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Jackson Trask connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyson Bongo, and Trask himself scored a pair of touchdowns and combined to run and pass for 138 yards.
Bongo and Royal also excelled on the defensive side of the ball, with both players grabbing an interception. Cody McMahon collected a team-high seven tackles and two sacks in the win.
The win improves the Roadrunners to 2-0 in regular season league play, and are tied for first place in the Eastern conference early into the campaign.
The team’s biggest challenge to date occurs today (Friday) when they travel to Coquitlam to take on the second-ranked Terry Fox Ravens, who are also sporting a perfect 2-0 record. That game kicks off at 7 p.m.
The Roadrunners continue on the road against Centennial on Oct. 12, and then host Kelowna on Oct. 20.
The Mission junior varsity team lost a heartbreaker in the team’s regular season opener on Sept. 26, falling 20-14 in overtime to the Seaquam Seahawks.
The juniors continue with exhibition games against Handsworth on Oct. 4 and Carson Graham on Oct. 10, before hosting New Westminster on Oct. 18 at 3:45 p.m.
