Two Mission softball teams earned first and second place at the U12 B.C. Regional Championships.
The event ran June 7-8 in Langley, and the Mission Green Machine took gold, followed by the Hornets, which earned silver.
The Green Machine had a standout season winning nearly 90 per cent of its games, according to coach Steve Zanatta.
The road to the gold medal matchup was seven games long, and Zanatta said the only loss was the first game.
“They were a little nervous as they had never played in front of so many people, but after that they settled down and won the next six straight games to take the championship,” he said. “In the last game they came from behind thanks to solid pitching and good defence.”
The Green Machine were down 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Hits by Ayla MacDougle, Deja Zanatta, Hayley Derlago and Avery Loewen put the team up 6-4. Derlago was voted best pitcher and Loewen put on a batting clinic, said Zanatta, with homeruns in four out of seven games.
