Mission’s Victoria Seal capped off her high school wrestling career in style, winning her fourth consecutive gold medal and also being named the most outstanding female wrestler at last Tuesday’s provincial championships.
Seal didn’t allow a single point at the event, which was held at the Langley Events Centre, earning shutouts in all four of her 57 kilogram division matches.
She blanked Prince George’s Angela Wesner and Gleneagle’s Zhaoxin Yang 10-0 in the tournament’s first two bouts, then shutout Riverside’s Ryann McCready 12-0 in the semi-final and earned the gold with a 10-0 win over Kelly Road’s Kaily Pattison.
Thanks to Seal’s great showing, the Mission Secondary Roadrunners team managed to finish 29th overall in the province.
Last year Seal cleaned up, winning her division title at the Canadian Wrestling Championships and also being awarded the National Cadet Female Wrestler of the Year.
Seal wasn’t the only local to compete at the event, as Heritage Park Middle School student Kyle Fiset placed fifth in the male 48 kg division.
Fiset opened with 10-0 wins over Centennial’s Zach Mereigh and Cowichan’s Mattias Zachary, but then lost 10-0 in the semi-final to Tamanawis student Sehijvir Sandhu. He then lost a 16-14 decision to Notre Dame’s Tyler Leung and defeated Nechako Valley’s Hyatt Verduzco 10-5 in the fifth place match.
