Mogul skiers take on Calgary NorAm

Current and past members of the Apex Freestyle Club competed in an FIS NorAm in Calgary

Apex Freestyle Club was well represented by current and former athletes in the FIS Nor Am in Calgary Feb.13-14.

In ladies single moguls, Mackenzie Schwinghamer placed 20th, Kassidy Todd was 27th, Anna Spence 29th and Shaina Finlayson, 36th. In ladies dual moguls, Schwinhamer placed 28th, Mason Barzilay 32nd, Finlayson was 35th and Anna Spence, 37th.

In men’s single moguls, Brayden Kuroda was 25th, Noah Spence 26th, Hayden Person 27th, Josepth Durham 31st and Koleton Phipps was 35th. In the dual moguls, Kuroda took seventh, Phipps was 20th, Spence 34th, Person 41st and Durham 45th.

AFC coach Kenni Kuroda said it was a difficult course that was icy on the last day. The conditions make it hard to push in and several skiers fell. Kuroda said Brayden did extremely well competing against athletes 10 years older. Kuroda felt that all the skiers performed well in the singles event against a field featuring Australians, Chinese, Europeans, Americans and Canadian skiers, some who compete at the World Cup level.

“The field was very strong,” said Kuroda.

This event was the first of four NorAm’s. The next is at the Utah Olympic Park on Feb. 20-21.
