Abbotsford’s Jared Mortensen had little in common with Kevin Costner – until now.
The Tampa Rays product suited up for the Durham Bulls, the same team featured in the popular baseball movie Bull Durham – only Mortensen did something Costner never did, which was shut out the opposition
Mortensen blanked the Norfolk Tides 6-0 in the Bulls finale on Sept. 7 to finish a perfect two wins and no losses in his pair of AAA starts this season. He worked his way out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third and struck out seven in the win.
The strong summer isn’t over yet for the Abbotsford Cardinals alum, who returns to the AA Montgomery Biscuits for the team’s playoff run in the Southern League. The Biscuits take on the Chattanooga Outlooks in a best of five in the semi-final starting on Sept. 10, with the South League finals occurring later this month.
Mortensen has compiled a record of seven wins and five losses, with an ERA of 3.78 and a WHIP of 1.22 in 24 appearances for the Biscuits this season. He continues his upward momentum in baseball’s minor leagues, after starting 2014 in Single-A with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League.
Earlier this summer, Mortensen helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal win in baseball at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto. The Canadian team won the medal in July with a 7-6 win over the United States.
He’s scheduled to pitch in game five of the semi-final, if necessary.
Mortensen and the Biscuits are looking for Montgomery’s first league title since 2007. Visit milb.com for details on how the club fares.
