Motorists appreciate RCMP checks of motorists pulling boats

RCMP wrapped up July’s provincial Counter Attack campaign with a message to motorists and boaters

Chilliwack’s  RCMP wrapped up July’s provincial Counter Attack campaign with a message to motorists and boaters.

“Our goal is to make our highways and waterways safer by educating the public to the danger and criminal consequences of impaired operation of a motor vehicle or vessel”, said Cst. Matt Wright of Chilliwack Seasonal Policing Section.

On Thursday July 30, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until noon officers from Chilliwack Traffic Section teamed with Seasonal Policing Section checked motorists pulling boats at the Cultus Lake traffic circle.

Police stopped 15 vehicles over the two hour period distributing Transport Canada brochures with tips on Boating Safety and Pre-Departure Checklist while addressing both topics with drivers and boaters.

The road side boating checks by police were well received from the community, “Great idea-keeps everyone safe”, said one Chilliwack man.

“The traffic stops also gave us an opportunity to inspect trailers, hitches and boats.  For the most part all of the vehicles we saw were well maintained”, said Cst. Mike Sabulsky of Chilliwack Traffic Services.

“If you are drinking in your boat on the water how are you getting home from the lake?” asks Michael Weightman Road Safety Coordinator of ICBC.

RCMP and our partners at ICBC remind the motoring public that police will be patrolling our highways and waterways this summer.  Should you decide to drink plan ahead for a safe ride home.
