Mouat football continues hot start

Hawks post road win, Panthers and T-Wolves fall in exhibition play

It’s still early, but the W.J. Mouat Hawks senior varsity football team couldn’t have asked for a better start to its time in the Pacific conference.

Coming off a 41-6 win over the Earl Marriott Mariners in week one, the Hawks travelled to Vancouver on Friday to take on the Eric Hamber Griffins and posted a 33-20 win.

Mouat trailed 14-0 in the third quarter, but then roared back with 33 unanswered points to earn the victory.

Hawks running back Nathan Hausermann continued his excellent early-season play, collecting 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Receiver Keenan Barker and quarterback Tyran Duval connected on a 38-yard major, and Ebiye Okoko grabbed a pick-six, two other interceptions and nine tackles defensively.

Mouat sits tied for first in the Pacific, and next travels to Vancouver Island on Friday to take on Nanaimo District. The club then returns home to host the Spectrum Thunder on Sept. 28.

Also in AAA play, the Abbotsford Panthers fell 40-6 to the New Westminster Hyacks on the road on Friday.

The Panthers offence was held to just 76 total yards offence in the exhibition game, and scored its lone major on a kick-off return in the third quarter.

Abbotsford finished the exhibition winless in two games, and opens regular-season play in the AAA’s Eastern conference on Friday in Mission. Kick-off for that game is set for 3 p.m.

Also in exhibition play, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves fell 35-21 to the Windsor Dukes in North Vancouver on Friday.

Bateman trailed 20-7 at halftime, but then drew closer in the second half with quarterback Logan McDonald connecting on touchdown passes to Ryan Sztuhar and Markus Rauch.

The Wolves continue the preseason on Friday, when they host the Westsyde Bluewave. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
