Sometimes skiing down a flat slope just isn’t enough.
While it’s a bit of a drive for West Shore residents, Mount Washington is offering competitive, development and beginner freestyle programs to satisfy those looking to hit the slopes this winter.
The programs focus on moguls, slope style as well as big mountain skills and registration opens this Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre (3001 Vanier Dr.) in Courtenay from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can also register online at mwfreestyle.com.
According to a statement, the aim of the programs is to provide each skier with the necessary skills (physical, mental and technical) to achieve their goals. The programs provide opportunities for skiers to experience various levels of competition as well as to enjoy being able to go out and rip all over the mountain.
Freestyle programs run on Dec. 27 with limited space available and pre-registration is required. Participants need their own equipment, lift pass and must be able to ski blue runs confidently.
The jumps and bumps program is for entry level and younger skiers, targeting children between the ages of six and 12. Participants must be comfortable in skiing steeper blue runs and must be able to load the chair unassisted. The program includes 13 or 26 days of coaching, with training beginning on Jan. 6 and ending on Apr. 1.
The freestylerz program includes carving on groomers, skiing moguls, hitting jumps and terrain park activity. This program is for ages 12 and up and includes 13 or 26 days of training also starting on Jan. 6 and ending on Apr. 1.
Mt. Washington is scheduled to open on Dec. 8 with night skiing starting on Dec. 21.
