Mustangs season comes to a close in Valley championship

The Princess Margaret senior girls basketball team season ended with a loss to Okanagan Mission

A 60-42 loss in the Okanagan Valley championship to the Okanagan Mission Huskies ended the season for the Princess Margaret Mustangs senior girls basketball team on Feb. 20.

Caitlin Neary led the Mustangs with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Cassie Hannon chipped in nine points and grabbed nine boards.  Reiley Terbasket pulled in 11 rebounds before breaking her nose in the third quarter.

The Mustangs hopes of advancing to the provincial championships were dealt a severe blow in the opening game against Kamloops’ Westsyde when Shinaaz Johal injured her knee in the second quarter and was lost for the weekend. The Mustangs dropped the game 59-39. Terbasket led the way with 15 points while Neary chipped in 10.

In a must-win game Friday, the Mustangs built a 20-point lead before hanging on to defeat the Summerland Rockets 51-45.  Steph Gomes-Ortiz led the way with a career high 15 points while Neary knocked down 12. Vanessa Edis added 10 and Harleen Bansoota made key baskets down the stretch to record seven points.

Fielding four senior players, the Mustangs were helped out by junior players Edis, Hannon, Bansoota, Carley DeKock and Manreet Grewal, who played well and showed coach Dave Killick great promise moving forward through the program.

The Huskies went on to easily claim one of the three berths to the provincials.  Immaculata of Kelowna defeated Vernon Secondary in the championship game with both teams claiming the other berths.
