Nanaimo high schools set the pace at Vancouver Island’s cross-country running championships.
The Nanaimo District Secondary School senior girls and the John Barsby Secondary School senior boys won their respective Vancouver Island titles at the meet, held last Wednesday at Nanaimo’s Beban Park.
The best individual result saw Barsby’s Gage Zanette take third place in the senior boys’ division to lead his team to victory.
Notably, that race’s second-, third- and fourth-place finishers all had a time of 16 minutes, 49 seconds – Keaton Heisterman, running for Brentwood College but a Nanaimo Track and Field Club member, Zanette and then Fraser Van Allen of Dover Bay. Other top 10 finishers in the senior boys’ race included Cyrus Urbanowicz of Dover, Ethan Hart of Barsby, Matthew McCandless of NDSS and Jayden Watson of Barsby.
In the senior girls’ race, Kate Cameron of NDSS led the Islanders with a fourth-place finish and a time of 19:39. Hayley Martin and Kyra Gillette of NDSS also finished in the top 10.
In the junior boys’ race, Dylan Barberie of NDSS finished ninth and in the junior girls’ race, Jada Kamerman of Nanaimo Christian School placed ninth.
Provincial championships take place this coming Saturday, Nov. 2, in Abbotsford.
