The Nanaimo Pirates were able to earn their first win of the B.C. Premier Baseball League season, but that’s all.
The Pirates split with the Parksville Royals on Saturday up Island, losing 3-2 and winning 5-4, but were swept by the Whalley Chiefs on Sunday on the mainland, falling 3-2 and 11-0.
“It’s a process. We have some young guys on the team, this is a step up for them and they have to get used to playing at this level,” said Doug Rogers, the team’s manager. “We as coaches have to be patient with it and not get frustrated to the point of not teaching. So we’re going to stay diligent and every mistake that’s made, or anything that happens on the field, we’re going to make sure kids are accountable and they learn the process.”
The Pirates were able to protect their lead and win in Saturday’s late game, as the Royals had men on second and third with one out but the visitors held on.
Garrett Goodall was the winning pitcher, benefiting from a 5-0 lead before he even threw his first pitch.
In the early game that day, Matt Skingle had two hits.
In Sunday’s first game, Colin Borrelli had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
GAME ON … The Pirates visit the North Shore Twins on Saturday (April 23), then hold their home openers Sunday against the White Rock Tritons at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium.
