There’s only a week and a half left in lacrosse season to somehow break a five-way tie for first place.
The Nanaimo Timbermen and four other teams find themselves in a remarkable logjam atop the Western Lacrosse Association standings.
The Victoria Shamrocks (9-5), the Maple Ridge Burrards (9-6), the Timbermen (9-6), the New Westminster Salmonbellies (9-6) and the Burnaby Lakers (9-6) all have 18 points in the standings with games running out. One of the five teams that is tied for first place today will miss the post-season.
The T-men had a chance to get a leg up in the standings this past Sunday, but suffered an 11-10 overtime loss to the Salmonbellies at Frank Crane Arena. Jon Phillips had a hat trick and three assists for Nanaimo in that one and Evan Messenger scored twice, but the ‘Bellies got a three-on-three OT winner from Jordan McBride to take the win and the season series.
In other WLA news, Phillips was chosen the league’s Player of the Week after scoring five goals and assisting on eight others over three games, with the T-men going 2-0-1 during that stretch.
GAME ON … The senior A T-men host the Langley Thunder on Saturday, July 20, at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, then visit the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday on the mainland. Tickets to Saturday’s game will be available at the door.
